When I use the first command string it returns '(integer) 0'. The second returns 'Audio Cards database initialized'.

There is no change in the volume control action or in the PCM setting in the MPD config shown in the debug listing.

Perhaps I have to re-burn the image and start all over again ........

That made no difference unfortunately.

I tried manually editing the /etc/mpd.conf but having rebooted it reverts to PCM.
