Hardware volume control broken

Postby ianhaynes » 20 Oct 2016, 14:49

The hardware volume control has stopped working. This seems to have happened after installing Python etc on the Pi. If I try to change volume, either by clicking the icon or moving the dial, it always goes back to 100%. The mute button doesn't work either. Software volume works correctly.

Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this?

Hi ianhaynes,

did you update the kernel?
If so you have to change the mixer settings.
Your debug info will tell you more.

Can you give me a clue of what to look for?

I do see:

audio_output {
name "IQaudIODAC"
type "alsa"
device "hw:1,0"
mixer_control "PCM"
mixer_type "hardware"
mixer_device "hw:1"
dsd_usb "yes"
auto_resample "no"
auto_format "no"
enabled "yes"
}

I also see what look like a large number of errors further down the debug data (although they don't seem related to the problem):

4.414835] systemd[1]: Cannot add dependency job for unit systemd-journald.service, ignoring: Unit systemd-journald.service is masked.
[ 14.430169] systemd[1]: Cannot add dependency job for unit systemd-journal-flush.service, ignoring: Unit systemd-journal-flush.service is masked.
[ 14.447529] systemd[1]: Cannot add dependency job for unit systemd-logind.service, ignoring: Unit systemd-logind.service is masked.
[ 14.462910] systemd[1]: Cannot add dependency job for unit haveged.service, ignoring: Unit haveged.service failed to load: No such file or directory.
[ 14.480293] systemd[1]: Cannot add dependency job for unit display-manager.service, ignoring: Unit display-manager.service failed to load: No such file or directory.

This is repeated many times.

Sorry. I installed Python but didn't update the kernel.

Looking at the mixer controls I see:

PCM devices: (aplay -L)
--------------------------------------------------
null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
default:CARD=ALSA
bcm2835 ALSA, bcm2835 ALSA
Default Audio Device
sysdefault:CARD=ALSA
bcm2835 ALSA, bcm2835 ALSA
Default Audio Device
default:CARD=IQaudIODAC
IQaudIODAC,
Default Audio Device
sysdefault:CARD=IQaudIODAC
IQaudIODAC,
Default Audio Device

and:

audio_output {
name "IQaudIODAC"
type "alsa"
device "hw:1,0"
mixer_control "PCM"
mixer_type "hardware"
mixer_device "hw:1"
dsd_usb "yes"
auto_resample "no"
auto_format "no"
enabled "yes"
}

I'm still getting my head around all this so bear with me!

Hi ianhaynes,

installing Python can not be the reason for your Problems.

Please post the complete debug info.

OK in that case I did upgrade the kernel. I used pacman -Syy to refresh the packages in order to find Python2, as described in this post on using LCD buttons.

Can I change the mixer_control from PCM to Digital somewhere in the system?

Your help appreciated.

I've just looked back at a debug log I'd pasted in January when, as far as I recall, the volume control was working, and the mixer_control is set to PCM there. ???
