Will adding kernel modules for I2S enable I2S over hdmi or is an additional chip/ additional harware required to enable i2s over hdmi?

And in the case of simply compiling kernel modules could someone indeed post a little howto to crosscompile the kernel with the correct modules and make the raspberry boot with this setup.

I just discover Rune Audio project a few time ago, and I buy a Raspberry Pi and a HifiBerry Dac to test it!

Hello Francois_59, we are testing 3 sample boards in these days, a RaspyPlay3 board (npejcic's DAC) and 2 HiFiBerry (an analog one and a Digi one). We are going to support them all in the next 0.3-beta release coming soon, and they will be selectable from the "Audio Output" dropdown menu under MENU > MPD in the RuneUI.

I think we will need at least two more weeks. We have been slow down by a lot of work in our jobs lately, but we are trying to code as much as we can to release the 0.3-beta as soon as possible.

I'm currently using Volumio to support the HiFiBerry, but when I tested Rune (using HDMI output on the Raspberry Pi) I found the Rune GUI to be more responsive, better looking, and the suppor for cover art is also a nice touch.

Hopefully, I will be able to switch back to Rune very soon (that rhymes!)

Just in case anyone hasn't seen this, the HiFiBerry DAC does indeed work with Rune beta 2: http://devicecontext.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/runeaudio-with-hifiberry.html

It works very well. I'm quite happy with it.

I have tried that and yes it Works.
But I still look forward to the new beta. I can't use Rune without WIFI support.
I found some code that could ad WIFI, but I can't use it because Rune forget the settings when rebooting.

So until beta0.3 I will stay on Volumio!!!!

I power my pi via GPIO pins 1 & 6. Also use a GPIO IR receiver. Are there any I2S DACs which can be used, while retaining access to GPIO pins?

The IQaudIO Pi-DAC exposes gpio 22/23/24/25/27, 3v3 and also i2c allowing additional small load devices to be connected without hacking or soldering things.

We've used it for rotary encoders /IR etc.

We are polishing the last details, so I hope soon. The good news is that I2S support is already working flawlessly for all the DACs presented in this forum.

The Hifi Berry actually only electronically connects using the p5 headers so I've just used jump wires to connect the hifi berry leaving the GPIO pins all free for my LCD.
