I believe that is a common technique in professional audio.

I tested that a couple decades ago. Didn't work for reading minds, but it was great for listening to music with no cables or headphones required. Noise level was a bit high...

There also an optical version of S/PDIF interface which is usually called Toslink, because uses Toslink optical components. The transmission media is 1 mm plastic fiber and the signals are trasmitted using visible light (red transmitting LED). The optical signals have exactly the same format as the electrical S/PDIF signals, they are just converted to light signals (light on/off). Because high light signal attenuation in the Toslink fiberoptic cable, the transmission distance available using this technique is less than 10 meters (with some equipments only few meters).

Also keep in mind that AES3 and S/PDIF formats were originally designed for sample rates up to 48kHz.
The introduction of double sample rates (88.2 and 96 kHz) initially caused problems because the expanded bandwidth requirement exceeded the capabilities of most interface electronics.
And we try to get 192 kHz with cheap equipment to work over 10m distance.

Hi Guys

Hey Frank - is 10m too long or not long enough? The audio equipment is a distace away and the cable snakes along the edges (health and safety - so I do not break my neck).

I have been reading stuff and it is very conflicting. So I am very confused. But still willing to give it a go...

I would say: too long for either optical or coax digital transmission of an audio signal. I could find the exact distance specifications recommended for both optical and coax for digital transmission of an audio signal, if you need? Coax are sold that long (10m) for TV antenna's.

Well I will let you know...when the cable arrives.

From my limited experience 10 optical is OK for 44.1 and up to somewhere less than 96.0 (as it works here)...But my audio stuff is that far from the PC and the Pi/rune.

Hi Guys.

Once again thank you. It has been a confusing learning experience.

The designer of the Little Dot 1 DAC confirmed

• USB limited to 44.1 kHz
• Optical up to 96 kHz
• Coaxial – up to 192 kHz

Interesting… I got the coaxial cable today….10m long, so it will reach the equipment.

Results:

• 96 kHz sounds great.

• 192 kHz is not really good. It does show on the display 192, but the music is a little distorted and crackles.

I have also relayed the results to the Little Dot man and hope he shines some light on the problem. I would never have thought it was all in the cable.

All I can say is a BIG THANK YOU.

Plus, experiment and observe the results…. now will have to work out what is next….

Learning, in my experience, always is confusing, until I know. Let me know what the "Little Dot man" says, I'm interested. It's a DIY project, the Raspberry Pi, so "experiment and observe" is the key, IMHO... until they release a manual.

Re kids: Geeze man, I hope it's only that ol' father flu... it'll be over soon.

Now I need a Coaxial (with RCA) switch....ha-ha ...it never ends. I did look for some DAC....from cheap to expensive....always more to learn.

Hi foxint,

is there a need for having your Pi so far away from your stereo?
Why not placing it at your audio equipment and use a long ethernet cable?
Would make things easier.

Thank you for the question.

I think the real issue is the audio from the PC. I want to be able to switch between the PC audio and the Pi Audio.

I suppose I could get a longer Cat 6 cable. But at the moment the Pi and the PC are in the same place. When I workout how to increase the PC (Media Monekey) out put to more then 44.1 I will the coaxial/optial problem

My DAC - Max USB is 44.1/Optical 96 kHz/Coaxial 192 kHz.....those annoying 192 kHz flac files.

The RCA cable works well, but the PC has a Optical out and the DAC does not have a remote input changer....

More problems. Yes they are caused by me and my setup.

Now I have proved the Rune is #1 I will have to come to some solution with the other audio, especially watching movies...

If you have any suggestions I would be very happy to listen and LEARN.
