So my questions: why did it not copy and why could I not see the properties of the HDD as I do when it is connected to the PC?
Very confusing. I thought it should work like an attached HDD??
Networking is always confusing, after 2.5 years study and 7 years applying my learned knowledge, it's still confusing. I have knowledge, but skill takes time. To your questions...
"...why did it not copy..." <------ Read, write, edit access.... to do those things via a network you need 'permission' (not from your wife), you need an account that has permission to do those things via a network, usually on the networked device (or both devices).
"...why could I not see the properties of the HDD..." <---- As above.
"...as I do when it is connected to the PC..." <----- On your PC you have administrator permisson, this allows you to do everything and anything, thus the reason most users fug up their PC. The Linux's are smarter than Windblows, with Linux you have to 'earn' it (by reading and learning).
"I thought it should work like an attached HDD" <----- You assumed this, and when you assume you make an 'ass' out of 'u' and 'me'. Assume nothing, this technology does not work by faith, ie "I think it should, so it should." You are connecting from a Windows system to a Linux system. Sort of like trying to order a Chinese meal from a person that does not speak English. Different languages.
Also, Frank did give you the answer.... search google or this forum. Someone may have already asked the same question here, or somewhere else on the Internet! And read, make no assumptions, read some more, and only as a LAST resort ask. I setup the Raspberry Pi, with RuneAudio, without asking a question.... I READ, READ, READ. If you don't have time to read, then take it slower. It took 2 months for me, with reading. Or, buy a unit that already does what you want it to do (that way someone else has done the work, and reading, for you, and you pay for that). I'm not trying to be rude to you brother, but if as you said you were treated like an "idiot" elsewhere, then I would say it's because you are asking questions that already have been answered, and you have not taken the time to read before asking questions. Hope this helps.
