It will give you more volume, more sense of being "in the middle of it". (I don't know how to express that correclty in English, sorry)

But it will completly muddle your sound-stage. That feeling that by closing your eyes, you know how to pinpoint musicians on the stage in front of you. It wll destroy a lot of details by messing up with how your ear works (basically, you can't have phase coherence with 2 speakers outputing the same channel).

Oh, and your stereo amp may be able to sustain the load of the 4 speakers but it will saturate at lower volumes than using just two. (clipping, distorsion, harshness in the sound... ugly!)
As for choosing your speakers, some tell you that 100€ boxes are fine and others will tell you you need 2k€ ones... just go listen to some stuff and create you own opinion. You will save time and money in the long run by not having to change your gear next year.
