dtoverlay=hifiberry-digi
in /boot/config.txt
- reboot your Pi

Please post your debug info as mentioned on the "post a reply" page.
To get the best possible support, please specify your hardware and RuneAudio version. Collecting debug info is also suggested.

I did that and nothing. The only options in MPD are Raspberry Pi analog or HDMI. Here is the Debug report: http://pastebin.com/Swi0F2Nq

from your debug data i can see that the drivers are loaded correctly but your card isn't recognized.

The Hifiberry Digi+ board works with the actual image for the RP2 see here.

I have installed Runeaudio .4(build:beta-20141216)

.
This version data is from the credits page. I have forgotten to change this, so it is useless to identify the version.
Please use this image (RuneAudio_rpi2_0.3-beta_20150304_2GB.img),
or the newest image with local browser support from here.

Success! I downloaded the latest RuneAudio version from the link you provided, edited config.txt , and the option for the Hifiberry Digi+ showed up in MPD this time. i did all this on a different Mac this time, at my office instead of at home. The problem may have been a glitch in Text Edit on my Mac at home, it had been complaining each time I saved config.txt but it did not complain on this computer at my office.

Regardless, thank you very much for the help and suggestions, I really do appreciate it. I am very impressed with the RuneAudio forums.
