correctly labelled jpeg cover files not always displaying

matt

Whenever I notice an album cover not showing up during playback I go into the folder to see whats wrong, its usually the file named Cover or Folder and changing the capital letter to lower case fixes the problem.
Over the last couple of days I have been finding covers not being displayed and when I check it out everything seems correct. They are jpegs named cover or folder, szie varies from 45kb to 840kb, there dosesn't seem to be any strange files in the folder that aren't in the other folders but they just wont show up.
I've renamed cover to folder and vice versa, updated folders, deleted the files then re loaded them but nothing seems to work. I just get the runeaudio logo.
Unfortunately due to the large number of music files I have and the fact that I'm not always checking the cover displays means I cant be 100% sure that this is a new problem, but the fact I haven't encountered it before suggests it is and I think it's since the latest gitpull.
An ideas out there?

Can anybody explain how this might happen. It stayed like this for the duration of the album. The previously played album was Alice in Chains which displayed correctly. There are no Bowie jpegs in the Clash folder. Very strange and not the only time its happened.

ACX

The system tryes to retrieve the cover on multiple levels of fallback, in this order:

embedded cover (in the media file)
jpg/png file in the same folder
Last.fm API
if nothing of above works, it displays the rune

So the fact that you see a cover art even when you don't have any images in the folder is normal.
What's not normal is the behaviour you described in you first post. Can you tell us more details about it? It would be very useful to reconstruct the pattern in wich the issue occurs.

matt

Hi ACX,
at this point I really can't add much info unfortunately. I will try to make some notes when I see it happen and maybe we can glean some information with them. They aren't neccessarilly obscure albums either so I also think its strange that runeaudio isnt pulling something from last.fm. Once or twice I havent even had the rune logo just a blank black square.
With regard to my second post, there actually is a cover jpeg. for The Clash in the folder but as you can see the image displayed is of David Bowie.

Is anyone else having these problems?

I have just had a play around and slowly skipped through 30 songs on shuffle.
The 8th song played was by Muddy Waters, the album is Sings Big BIll Broozny, the cover image shown was Jimi Hendrix Experience - Axis Bold as Love.
The 20th song was off Oasis - Definitely Maybe, and only the rune logo came up.
This is the contents of that folder :

: oasis.PNG (105.66 KiB) Viewed 2541 times

The 30th song played was from U2 - 18 singles and only a blank black square was displayed. I can say with 100% certainty that this album has diplayed correctly before.
Heres the contents of the folder :

: u2.PNG (144.64 KiB) Viewed 2541 times

All other albums displayed correctly

I don't know if that helps, I may try reimaging the sd card.

"sigh"
I have just played a song from U2 - 18 singles and had the same result, a blank black square. Oasis - Definitely Maybe, the cover was displayed correctly this time. Muddy Waters - Sings Big Bill Broozny, cover displayed correctly.
So 2/3 of the time (in this very small sample) it seems to be a completely random bug.

Hi Matt,
I am seeing this behavior as well, but cannot really find a way to pinpoint good repro steps for the bug. As a matter of interest, are you seeing this using files mounted on a Windows share? I seem to be able to repro this from time to time if the files are from a Windows share but not from a USB or Samba mount...

matt

AndreR - yes I am using a windows share.
Hopefully that info helps someone sort this out (its way beyond me) as this problem seems to be getting stranger by the day.
I have just changed a file from Cover to cover which was successful in having the album cover displayed (was just showing rune logo before I changed it) . However if I play the album again now it only shows the logo again.

Oh its Jethro Tull - Aqualung , I've just looked it upon lastfm and the info is there so why isnt runeaudio using this if it cant see the file in the folder?

matt

BUMP
I still haven't worked this out. I must admit I haven't noticed an incorrect album cover recently but I'm still regularly getting the rune logo when there is a perfectly good correctly named cover file in the folder.
Anyone else getting this, or just AndreR and myself?

Have you checked your ID3-tags for images?

As ACX said RuneAudio looks for embedded art first, IF none is found THEN the folder image is displayed. If you're not getting the folder image, that indicates that the embedded art is displayed. That's the built-in logic.

Of course, it could be a bug. It's not one that I have ever encountered though.

Yes I have checked the tags for embedded images and found only one or two had incorrect cover art, but it was still art related to that particular album not a completely different artist as has happened.
99% of the time I have a problem it is the Runeaudio logo that is shown which suggests runeaudio has looked at the tags for embedded art , then looked at the folder and failed to see the cover or folder image in the file, then checked last.fm and found nothing (common albums some of these) and has then displayed the rune logo.
Somewhere along the line the built in logic is failing.

Matt: I've provided some repro steps to the dev team - they will be looking at what sounds like a Windows shares' only issue.
Meanwhile - just in order to gather more info - would you be willing to put the exact same folder structure and files you have on your windows share (or part of it) onto an USB key, connect it directly to the Rasp and play the same set of tracks and see if you get the correct (i.e. the one embedded) displayed in RuneAudio's main page?

ryanmcclure

Does this only apply for "shown" jpg images? I save my albums as:

Album (Directory)
-01.flac
-02.flac
-01.flac
-.Artwork (Hidden artwork folder)
-.cover.jpg (Hidden album art)

This way when I open my music folder while browsing on my computer, it only displays the audio files by default. I've noticed that RuneAudio doesn't show my hidden album art files--at least, I don't think it does. I suppose that this is intended behavior?

ACX

@[deleted]: do you mean if they should be listed in the UI when you browse your library? In that case, no - the library only shows the media content (music) indexed in MPD's database.

Yep I'll give that a try, I'll get back to you when I have the results.
Thanks

I meant when i listen to music, the album art under "Playback" does not display the album art that is saved as .cover.jpg or anything hidden.

Hi Ryan,
are you are the folders you are having issues with shared from a Windows machine?
If that's the case, then you might be hitting the same issue Matt and I are seeing and discussed in this thread.
If you are not sharing them from a Windows box, can you please try removing the hidden attribute to a .jpg file, rename it folder.jpg or cover.jpg and see what happens?

Thanks.

Hi all,

i think i have a solution for your problems with cover art on windows shares (SMB/CIFS).

Please try to remount your share with the option "noserverino".

Please let me know if it helps.

AndreR

Hi Frank,
this seems to be working very well for Windows shares.
Thanks a lot.
