Is this just the nature of the NAS setup or are there settings within Rune I can play with to get a better experience?
No it isn't a problem with NAS in general.
Using the internal wifi may be the most limiting factor.
You can try:
- use ethernet instead of wifi
- disable internal wifi and use a usb dongle
- use NFS for your network mount
- play with mpd settings (buffer size and buffer before play)
- play with the mount options.
