How to extract files from a dead pi? (Solved)

My pi just gave in and wont turn on now and i bought a pi 3 as my old is pi 1 and i need the files i edited to make it work with the new pi but how do i access the files if i dont have the original pi? I tried putting my SD card into the pi 3 but wont boot as different structure i guess?
Any ideas how to retrieve the files?

You are guessing right.

The only chance you have is to read the card on a Linux machine.
For this you can use your RP3 and a USB micro sd card reader.
The card should auto mount and you can access it with SFT program like WinSCP.

Windows users can access the data on the SD card with the help of special software that can read ext4 linux filesystems. Paragon ExtFS for Windows (free trial) worked for me. But there also other programs that does the same thing.
