If you did see that, I don't believe that was an accurate statement. In GENERAL newer, async DACs all work properly.
some older versions of async may have issues with
some sources at higher data rates.
Optical is not usually reliable above 96KHz, no matter how good the manufacturer did their job, because of legacy issues, and because of limitations of the 1-mm plastic fiber used in most cables. It may work, but can't be guaranteed to work, unless you buy the transmit end, the cable, and the receiver end from one company.
If you got the USB cable and the DAC from one company, it should work.
Are you playing 192K-24bit files from a local source/flash drive, or over a network?
Have you tried a different source at that sample rate?
Can you log in to the Pi via ssh/terminal, and check to see what is actually sent to the DAC?
Frank has posted some commands that can be used to print the type of data being sent from the MPD with is part of Rune, to an external DAC. The output looks like this, when I play 44.1K-16bit:
[root@runeaudio ~]# cat /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/sub0/hw_params
access: RW_INTERLEAVED
format: S16_LE
subformat: STD
channels: 2
rate: 44100 (44100/1)
period_size: 4410
buffer_size: 22050
[root@runeaudio ~]# cat /proc/asound/card1/pcm1p/sub1/hw_params
