HansBeekhuyzen wroteA bad power supply (switching mode PSU's in particular) cause harshness in any speaker. I am working on a test of several PSU's ranging from € 50 to € 250 which will be on line next month on my YouTube channel (youtube.com/c/TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel) and later also on the site.
Great! Been waiting for someone to do this.... I have on order a Gieseler LPSU $400AU, local Australian made (to power both the Pi and a sub EQ device, $275AU to power the Pi alone), someone has offered to loan me an SBooster $480AU (to power the Pi only), to compare between the two. I thought why not, should be interesting. I rang a local distributor about the iFi iPower $106AU, but have to wait until June for them to arrive here in Australia. I think that if the iFi iPower actually works as they say on their website it would be a low cost solution that may require investigation, aside from building a PSU myself which I can't (solder and me don't mix at all). There's been some discussion on the AU forum I frequent about power supplies for the Pi, that's where I found the Gieseler. Anyway, I am really looking forward to your comparison!
Addendum: I noticed in your video that your using an older SBooster BOTWS (Best of Two Worlds Solutions), and the newer SBooster is BOTW P&P ECO (Best of Two Worlds Power & Precision ECO) with added P&P ECO. Do you think this newer P&P ECO would bring any sonic benefit, or only the stated "
50% more output out of the used electronics and consumes even up to 35% less energy than a conventional design"? I would assume only the later, and a hefty price increase.
Also, it's my understanding that the SBooster's are not linear power supplies, just very low noise (switched mode) power supplies? Similar to the iFi iPower devices, switched mode, with added redesigned electronic 'magic' that suppress (or controls) noise. Anyway, not nick-picking, just an inquiring mind asking questions seeking to learn more is all.
Naysayers: I am in no way promoting a 'higher price power supply is better', or a 'linear power supply is better', or a 'switched mode power supply with added noise suppression technology is better' concept... rather I am a 'seeker' of knowledge.
