Perhaps you misunderstood Frank's directions (?)
Is the SD card plugged into a card reader, and in a PC, and you are trying to open /var/www in Nautilus? If so, I think this may not work. I believe Frank thought you would leave the SD card in the Pi, and then edit and save the files over the network, either using terminal and ssh to access the Pi, or Nautilus and ssh.
Assuming that you logged in from terminal, as root, you can now open and edit an existing file or a new file using the nano editor, then edit the file or paste text into an empty file, and save it using the directions at the bottom of the nano terminal window.
For example, at the prompt in terminal, type
nano /boot/config.txt
Now edit the file per Franks's directions, and type <ctrl>X to save and exit.
