Discovery wrote FWIW, I was originally very aware of the difference between TOSLink output and S/PDIF output on the Digi+ (there was significantly fuller bass on S/PDIF - the TOSLink sounded 'thin' in comparison, and definitely missing something). However, on experimenting today, the difference has gone. Perhaps, there's a burn-in period for the board until it settles down and gives its best performance?
Browsing the internet I came to the conclusion that TOSLink has its problems and propably is included to many Hi-Fi systems for promotional reasons. For example, more than once I read that TOSLink does not support 24/192 files, where this seem to be no problem in the set-up of others. As so many people seem to have problems with TOSLink I think that, among other things, there is a quality issue with TOSLink cables and whoever has a problem with TOSLink first should try another cable or play around with the problematic cable a bit. That's why I wouldn't suggest cheap cables. The optical "wire" within the cables are made of plastics and I can imagine that different types of synthetics can be used for that. But I also had an expensive cable that didn't really fit into the sockets of both, the player and the receiver.
What I don't know is the Jitter-sensitivity with the TOSLink system, but that's a general problem listening to digital audio anyway.
Regards.
