took me a while to get hardware volume control of RaspyPlay4 fixed while switching my setup from RaspberryPi B+ to RaspberryPi 2 so here is how I did finally:
Switch boot config to iqaudio by editing /boot/config.txt and uncomment:

device_tree_overlay=iqaudio-dacplus
Reboot and switch to hardware volume control in runeUI. Now you should hear your files only at full volume.
Putty on rune with root/rune and execute:

/srv/http/command/refresh_ao
This will produce some Errors.
However, your HW volume control should work now.
