Update kernel to enable hifiberry dac+?

I've had my hifiberry dac+ taunting me from ontop of one of my speakers for a couple of weeks now, as I wait, rather impatiently, for the 0.3 beta release.
The hifiberry site seems to suggest that updating the kernel may in fact get this dac to work with the 0.3 alpha.
Is this correct? Has anybody done this successfully? If it may/does work is there any reason not to do it?
