I got three PI3 running here, they all got exactly the same results as i explain..
and I got heatsinks on all of them.
"Discovery" what kind of super sized heatsink have you got ?
perform your test outside ? you live in Alaska ?

Haha, don't shoot the messenger...! :D I'm only reporting what I got with the same instruction you used. As I said, my CPU only feels warm to the touch, not hot, so the temperature sounds about right.

I don't have any heatsinks fitted and I live in England (with the central heating on!).

I do use a good linear power supply and fboe's three power supply mod but I doubt that explains the difference.

Did you see the link i posted ?
It reveal some times big difference in read out temperature.

Please direct me to the frost update ?
What is it about ?

Frost_dk's mods give much better sound clarity, and also slow the processing down a little so might benefit your temperatures: tweaking-the-audio-performance-rpi3-t4301.html Have fun! Ask if unsure.

Yes, I read the article. Regardless of measurement inconsistencies, my 'finger test' still says 'warm'...

my temperature issue is solved
cause1 : shiny heatsinks do not radiate heat as IR
cause2 : system inside closed case with no moving air = result same as no heatsink
cause3 : inside of case also very shiny = also reflect heat, so outside of case was Cold, inside burning hot.
fix1 : changed heatsinks to larger Black coated types = radiate heat IR, even if air dont move.
fix2 : painted box Black mate inside pick up IR, and drilled air holes in case.
NOW the CPU is 22 C colder and i am happy.

Good news. :)

I do wonder why vendors sell heatsinks with colours other than black, when matt black surfaces radiate heat better than any other.

on a non painted heatsink there is no difference in temperature IF there is plenty of moving air !

but huge difference if the main transport of heat is done via RADIATION
(in a non air movement application)

paint or anodizing cost Money.

Hi TommyBoy,

You made me worried ;-) so I bought some heatsinks for my Pi. It's now down to 27 deg, after extended playing but then it wasn't that hot in the first place. Still, better safe than sorry! :D

In fairness, I should advise that my Pi is currently running naked in the open. This is as a result of fboe's mods to add new power regulators. However I am about to put my LPS, RPi and the new regulator board in a large dedicated aluminium case so the heatsinks are to ensure it continues to run cool in a vented enclosure. And, of course, I'll be spraying the inside (and outside) of the case matt black before I complete it.

All the best,

Trevor
