Audio buffer

Postby pistollero » 16 May 2015, 07:45

Hello, yesterday i tried to increase the audio buffer to 131072 and after that only spotify works, everything else dont work. Example when select usb, the spining wheel doesn t stop. On the radios the same thing. I reduced to 65536 and everything was back to normal.
Can anyone help me?
I m using pi2

Hi pistollero,

there is a upper limit of 131071kB for the mpd audio buffer.

and after that only spotify works,

Spotify doesn't use mpd as player, so the buffer size has no effect on spotify.

One question, for that reason do you need such a huge audio buffer?
With 131071kB you can buffer 12.8 minutes with cd quality (16/44.1).
The buffer is used for example to overcome short network dropouts.

I think with the bigger buffer sounds better.
By the way, if spotify doesn t use mpd, what it use?

You could be surprised to discover that it doesn't :) Do some tests playing with the values and see which ones give you the best results.

I have three DACs, HiFiBerry DAC + , Durio sound pro and mamboberry and tested all three with 512, 1024, 2048, 4096... And so on. From 8192 the soundstage seems wider. But that is just my opinion.

Also try to set "Buffer before play" to disabled and see if it has impact on sound in your environment.

I am very interested in the Mamboberry DAC, how does it compare to the HifiBerry and Durio in terms of sound quality, sound stage, and especially in the low frequencies?

And, right now my settings are:
Audio buffer size: 2048 (but I prefer less, it's better)
Buffer before play: 20% (but I prefer 10% or less)
Sound signature: ACX (sounds just a little bit better than the others)
