Firstly, go to Menu > Settings and switch to the Wolfson kernel then Apply Settings and Reboot.
But here's no sound at this point until a Wolfson script is run ...

Saman’s (forum member) Wolfson version for 0.2 BETA has a directory /root/use_case_scripts so doing the same for 0.3 ALPHA ...
Using puTTY, create this directory and copy into it the file Playback_to_Lineout.sh

Now create a cron job to run this script at boot up ...
Do export EDITOR=nano
Do crontab –e and insert the following line then save & exit

@reboot ./root/use_case_scripts/Playback_to_Lineout.sh

Do systemctl enable cronie.service
Do systemctl unmask cronie.service
Do systemctl start cronie.service

Now do crontab –l to check that the cron job(s) is there

Now do systemctl status cronie to check that cronie is running

Power down properly via RuneAudio.

Fire up again ... it works ... no need to run the script via puTTy

Hope this helps

Thanks very much, work perfectly!! :D

Thank you Master for the elegant wolfson audio card patch you have shared with us.

It works seamlessly.

I wish to seek your advice on what are the differences between 'Playback_to_Lineout.sh' and 'Playback_to_Lineout.EQ.sh'.

What is the recommended choice between these two.

Thank you.

Hi ...
I opened each file and looked at the contents.
The ~~~EQ~ version has extra lines to route sound through the equalizer and more lines to adjust the equalizer.
Beyond that I'm lost.
Perhaps an expert like saman on this forum leg can give more advice.
(Incidently, I run Notepad++ (free download) on my Windows machine to view/amend files like this)

Thank you for the comments.

Perhaps the Master Saman would be able to explain this further.

johnbanks,

Kindly advice me whether there is any difference in the quality of the audio output using the 3_12 kernel from using the earlier 3_10 kernel and also the difference in the quality of the audio output using RaspyFi against Volumio 1.41 and RuneAudio 0.2.

Thank you.

Have no experience of RaspyFi or Volumio - so can't help there.

From the comments on the forum - 0.3 sounds 'better' than 0.2.

Sound quality is subjective and influenced by one's speakers of course. I'm delighted with 0.3 + Wolfson ... have an HD audio track of a fast movement of a Haydn string quartet - it almost takes my breath away with it's realism ... I can almost smell the rosin on the players' bows ... exaggerating to make my point :)

That's the expected result on most setups, because we introduced a lot of optimizations to make the system lighter and perform better. Kernel profiles have also been refined: if you have a revealing equipment, try to switch between them to find which one sound best to you.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to find info on how to apply this patch?
I have never applied a patch. Can i apply the patch to the 0.3 beta?

Thanks!

Good News! There's no need to apply the patch anymore, it's built-in for 0.3.

Once you've the Pi + Wolfson turned on, go to the runeaudio/ settings page select the Wolfson DAC and reboot. You will need to run the Playback_to_Lineout.sh file as mentioned above.
