Power Supply – Power Bank

My idea with this thread is to share knowledge about alternative ways of powering the Raspberry Pi, specifically the Power Bank.

I will try to use Rune Audio with a 10000mAh or 20000mAh power bank. I will share my results.

Today when we shut down the Rune Audio, the RB Pi stills on, there is no way to shut down the RPi at the same time?

Thanks

There is no soft power off with a raspberry pi because it has no advanced power management to control the hardware. if it did, you would need a soft on button (which could be done via gpio theoretically) but I dont think the pi has the hardware to do this

Thanks @Dohmar,

I will use the power bank power button :)

What about using a WOL server ?

When you use a software method to shutdown Rune Audio, the Pi is also in shutdown. It is not completely disconnected from power, so it still uses a tiny amount, but all USB devices are off. My Wifi dongle, wireless keyboard dongle, flash drive, HDD, and my HIFiBerry DAC+.

I measured about 7-8 mA current being used in this state. (Much less than my PC with WOL activated, or my video receiver.)

So, if you are using a battery power bank, in 24 hrs you would consume less than 200 mAH. A power bank with 10000 mAH capacity would last over a month (theoretically).

The problem is not a soft OFF, but a soft ON. For that, you need some additional hardware, software alone will not do it.

From a thread in the official Raspberry Forum:
Your RPi is perfectly capable of generating WoL packets for any destination machine on the same LAN segment. The thing it can't do is react to an incoming WoL packet.

I believe that the Pi does shut down with the shutdown command in rune audio. The red LED is illuminated any time power is connected. Pay attention to the yellow flashing LED to tell when it has shut down. Typically you will see some flashing after you give the shutdown command and then the yellow LED will go dark and stay dark.

Yellow LED? ... My eyes have been bad since HS, but is it REALLY yellow, not grn??

One thing I find confusing, is that occasionally the green LED on the hat DAC stays on after shutdown. Normally this would be a "don't care", but if on battery, I would want to know everything that can be turned off, IS off.

Hi Pete,

What is this hat DAC?
I'm asking, because on my HifiBerry DAC+ the green led is only on when playing music.
It goes off on shutdown.

Yellow, green. Either way works. My pi is from element 14 I think. They may use a different color.

I also have mine in an opaque case which may be altering the color.

Frank: same DAC+, I only use the HiFiBerry DAC+ with RuneAudio now. (The DIGI+ I occasionally mention is being used with Xbian). Usually everything shuts down, and only the red LED on the Pi stays on, but not always. I have been using the same two boards since January, a DIGI+ and a DAC+.

I monitor the current for other reasons, so I know when it is off. (Last week I am using the new case, so the LED on the hat DAC is mostly covered, so I have not noticed lately.)

Only changes lately have been the USB HDD, and the case, and some tests with a different/linear supply (this predates the power supply).
