using hdmi port for sound

Postby tsawyer » 13 Jan 2021, 23:11

I want to use the hdmi port of my pi3b+ running r6 (rAudio 1 • 20201230). I have more hdmi ports than analog ports so I tried it. of course no sound so I looked in the audio under mpd. I don't have an option to switch to the hdmi, only onboard headphones. I do see:

# cat /etc/asound.conf

defaults.pcm.card 0
defaults.ctl.card 0

do I edit it to say 1 instead of 0 or is there something else that allows hdmi output?

that option did not work, did a little more digging and saw something else. running these gave me an output of

cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [Headphones ]: bcm2835_headphonbcm2835 Headphones - bcm2835 Headphones
bcm2835 Headphones

aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Headphones [bcm2835 Headphones], device 0: bcm2835 Headphones [bcm2835 Headphones]
Subdevices: 8/8
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
Subdevice #1: subdevice #1
Subdevice #2: subdevice #2
Subdevice #3: subdevice #3
Subdevice #4: subdevice #4
Subdevice #5: subdevice #5
Subdevice #6: subdevice #6
Subdevice #7: subdevice #7

so to me, it seems like the hdmi port is ever recognized meaning it would be a little harder to select as the preferred sound output. has anyone been able to use the hdmi for sound?

I'm just running it on RCA outs, but does this discussion help?

thanx for the link. based on the date, I believe it deals with an older version of rune, not the current iteration. ironically the poster references a denon receiver which is what I have. the issue with their receivers is you have to configure ports. it does not just take a signal from an input and process it, you have to set things up *if you do not use hdmi*. thus, I preferred to use the hdmi port out of pi. I was using hdmi under the 0.5 older version without issue. from the lack of posts and not seeing any config that seemed to address hmdi hardware, I do not believe the latest version of rune has that capability. hopefully that function will be added in the near future.

and rite after I sent my post up, saw there was an update. of course I need to walk back parts of it, there is now hdmi support. thank you very much. I am leaving all the information up for reference but I now will be checking out the hdmi support later when I get some time to hop on that box/sound system

I updated to v 0.22.3-2 and don't see hdmi now. I really thought I saw it a few days ago. was that left out of the last update or something else happened (not excluding the fact I could be seeing things at this point)?

I'm still using release version: 0.4 (build: beta-20160313). Once I got my system setup, I just left well enough alone. I did just check and under the output settings (I'm using a generic I2S under the HiFi Berry setting) I do see the RaspberryPI's HDMI as an output choice. My B&K preamp is a Ref 50, so no HDMI ports to test it out.

On newer kernel, HDMI is disabled unless connected:
    - Before boot
    or
    - Set hdmi_force_hotplug, hdmi_group, hdmi_mode

does the receiver have to be on to send a signal to the hdmi port to show it's active at time of boot? I have a hdmi cable plugged in but I bounced the pi while the receiver was off. I can test it later tontie but wanted to check now.

and where/what file would the command be edited? I'm thinking I would (for my use) be better off forcing that config than having it on and selected everytime I update
