Raspberry Pi Model 4

Postby bnilsson » 12 Jul 2019, 09:26

Hi!

Are there any immediate plans to update RuneAdio for Raspberry Pi Model 4?
The hifiberry site states that we need updated software to support the new cpu.

I will be spending some time during the summer on RuneAudio v0.6b, this version will be a big step regarding all the software components used in RuneAudio. Support for the Pi 3A+ model is already tested. If all goes well it will also support the new Pi 4B model. For some comments on the 4B model, see here: raspberry-pi-4-t6845.html

Have you made any progress on the RP4 project?

Yes, but there are some serious issues with heat. Heat creates noise, the RP4 gets very hot and also needs a fan (also a source of noise). It is not really recommended for audio at the moment. Some firmware changes have been made, but it is not yet cool enough for audio use. There is also a possibility that a new hardware version will be released. For these reasons it currently has a lower priority for us, so no special RP4 release. Regardless of this it will be supported in the next major release.

Hi.
I would like to check how progress is going to support Raspberry PI 4? Is it still on roadmap for January. Is there any GitHub issue/merge request I can follow?

Andy,

I got a RP4 box and loaded the R-e2 image for RP4.
I must say it is working very, very well.
The R-e2 seems to be more cpu-heavy internally than the previous/standard version, since I got a LOT more USB dropouts to my Cambridge DACMagic Plus using my old RP3 when I used the R-e2 image. It was almost unbearable.
When I changed to the RP4, I hear nothing of this, even at 192kHz sampling. Everything is better, voices, strings smoothness, soundstage, etc.
I guess it must be the dedicated USB controller chip on the RP4?

The extra heat is not a problem since my RP4 case has a heatsink cold finger pressing to the CPU surface.
However, I can see a problem if you want to add a DAC or Digi card using the I2S contact, then the CPU cooling will be much more tricky.

Anyway, I am very happy with the result for now.

Hi bnilsson,

What case are you using for your RP4? Are you connecting to your DAC via USB directly?
Was wondering if there is a need for something like an Audioquest Jitterbug or one of the iFi's products.

thanks

Any update on this? I would love to try this out on my Pi 4. I don't want to have to return it for a Pi 3.
