No more pops and clicks with hi-res (24/192) files !

Postby jazzaj » 12 Apr 2016, 11:26

YES ! It's possible...

YES ! It's possible...

... but you have to change from Runeaudio to Archphile :/

The purpose of this thread is not to depreciate Runeaudio. I love Runeaudio and especially RuneUI. (YMPD is, how to say... far from being as usefull as RuneUI : no add and replace, covers, tags etc... MPDroid helps on my android phone but on my laptop it's a really a annoyance...)

In fact, I'm asking, as Runeaudio and Archphile use both Archlinux and MPD, if Runeaudio could definitively eliminate pops and clicks when listening to hi-res files, 24/192 files on my system :

Odroid C1+ (Runeaudio nightly build) and Audio-gd NFB1 (USB Amanero combo).

Come on Runeaudio ! We can see light at the end of the tunnel !

Have a nice day !

Hi Rikardo,
I know about this question :) ('192kHz music files make no sense') and I agree with that. I have some albums that are just perfect in 16/44 and I'm convince that the problem regards capacities of studio engineers...

But that's not the question here.

In my music library, I have files from 16/44, 24/44, 24/48, 24/96, 24/192 and some DSD to, 128, 256 etc.. In fact I don't really care about hi-res, top hi-res, mid-res etc.. but when I listen to some of my 24/192 there are clicks and pops. That's not so annoying, it's remember me my old vinyls :D

The question I ask for is why must I hear some clicks and pops if it's possible not.

yeah, sorry :0 I did not want to crap in your thread.

I can try tonight if I find some FLAC in 24/192 not sure I have some.
I use stream from Tidal HiFi as a digital source and I have some special albums in FLAC stored.
But if I really like to enjoy music I play records :P

No Problemo.

I love my turntable (a custom Lenco 75 with a mayware formula IV arm, spirit of 70's !) and playing records, but I must admit that the 'modern sound' of DACs is interesting too : wide soundstage, vivid sound, lot of dynamic ! There is a time for Hendrix's Stratocaster and a time for Massive Attack's synths :D

but all this considerations are a bit off-topic

And so we stay at topic...just trying some Phil Collins - Face Value (1981) HDTracks 24-192-FLAC. So far no pops, clicks or any distortion.
My HW is RPi 2 + AUDIOPHONICS I-Sabre V3 DAC ES9023 TCXO

I am not sure if this rip is badly done or if is dues to 24/192 but it sounds a bit suppressed and flat, lack of dynamics ...
I have to try some other music to be able to tell

so just to confirm, I have tried a different 24/192 album. Some Simon & Garfunkel - Greatest Hits 24/192 HD FLAC
The sound is much better so it seems the Phil Collins is very bad rip. Have to delete it.

And to confirm I have no issues with playback again

Holly fantasy world of bits !

Before I had an Odroid, I had a RPI2. As I was hearing clicks and pops and because of the bad reputation of the RPI usb bus, I went to an Odroid... and still have clicks and pops.

But I'm not the only one to notice clicks and pops, mainly on 24/192 (and more  ) files. Some people notice clicks and pops on i2s connection, that supposes eliminating the risk.

And most of all, yesterday I tried Archphile and noticed no more clicks and pops while Archphile and Runeaudio are twin projects (however Archphile uses more recent versions of MPD etc.)

But let us come back to the topic : is there a way to use Runeaudio (updating MPD, tweaking some files, amanero driver, don't no what...) to not hear clicks and pops... (in my particular case 8-) and for the unfortunate damned people like me  )

Unfortunately I have no more 24/192 tracks so can not do any extended test here
Maybe these clicks and pops are related to some memory buffering issues? No idea

Hi jazzaj,

is there a way to use Runeaudio (updating MPD, tweaking some files, amanero driver, don't no what...)

you can try this mpd version.

By the way my ODROID C1 with hifi shield plays 32/384 without problems.

Did you try to play with the mpd settings (buffer size / buffer before play / sound profiles)?
Where is your music stored (NAS, cifs or nfs)?
If the music is on a network share, do you connect via ethernet or wifi?
