I've been playing with Rotary Encoders and ALSA.

Sample code for adjusting the ALSA volume using such a rotary encoder is available on https://github.com/iqaudio/tools

More work may be needed as the process takes around 7% of the Raspberry Pi's CPU.

@rst1
Thanks for theinstructions.
As the pdf from IQaudIO for the Pi-DAC says that there is support in 0.3alpha and v0.3 isn't available yet and I sort of just gave up on trying RuneAudio.
I've been using volumio with my Pi-DAC but with these instructions I'm going to see how the Rune works for me...
I best order some more SD cards...

Please don't lose your faith in us :) The 0.3 for Rpi is close to be released, it's matter of days. You'll find a nice integration of IQaudIO DAC and also a specific "sound signature" (a set of kernel settings) specifically created for it, that optimize the overall SQ. Believe me that it will be worth the wait.

@ACX
I've not lost faith, I'm just late getting into the game. Looking forward to the release. Until then I'm just flashing 0.2 to a new SD card and will see if I can get it going following these instructions.

@Gordon
Sounding good... nice work :D

Hi, I'm just about to pull the trigger on the Pi-DAC order. I really like that it has a HW volume control.

As I'm using a regulated PSU for the RPi, does anyone know if the Pi-DAC has the 5V and GND exposed on the board like the HifiBerry does? If not, I guess I'll just have to access the GPIO pins directly.

Hi We don't expose +5v on the Pi-DAC. Power is taken from the Pi's P1 and P5 connectors directly.

You'll have to hack away :-)

Best regards,

Hi, and thanks for the quick reply.
It's barely a minor inconvenience, I find that the PCB holes in the HifiBerry are too small as well.
