Can we have more than one music library(set of album)?

Postby vshk » 24 Apr 2017, 02:27

Hi all,

This question may be for MPD as it seems runeaudio is just using it's library function, but I couldn't search anything related in various forums.

The background is that I have a large number of music files, and I would like to separate them into several sets of albums or media libraries. For example, it would be great if I can have a library or name of album set just showing all music under the DSD folder and another one showing all music under the folder of FLAC in the harddrive.

In fact, I don't see such kind of media library management function in most of the media related software, so I don't know if it is just a wrong thinking in my mind. The only one application I found is Plex media server, which can allow user to create additional music library freely. It almost made me change to the DLNA approach, but unfortunately there is a problem in Plex to recognize meta tag ID3v2.4 so it is still useless for me.

Any experience or thought on this would be highly appreciated.

Thanks!
Victor

Hi Victor,

with mpd there is no option to sort your library by resolution / filetype.
All the mpd database fields can be found here.

If i were you i would rearange my music library.
Mine looks like this:
Code: Select all
- DSD
    * A
        * Abba
        * AC/DC
    * B
    * C
.....
    * Z
- lossless (FLAC)
    * A
        * Abba
        * AC/DC
    * B
    * C
.....
    * Z
- lossy (MP3)
    * A
        * Abba
        * AC/DC
    * B
    * C
.....
    * Z

Hi Frank,

My original idea is to have more than one music library, e.g. a first library named DSD and a second one named FLAC. I found this can be done in the Plex media server.

I don't understand the way you arrange the music library you mentioned in the message.

Hi Victor,

RuneAudio (MPD) displays your music as a file browser will see it on disk.
If you like to have multible libraries you should have a folder for each.
- DSD
- FLAC
- MPD
and so on.
Each folder can be shared and setup in Rune as a source.
This order will not be recognized while browsing by Album or Artist.

We (community we) could probably come up with something where you "switch" libraries by updating a .mpdignore file to list everything except what you want to listen to. A script would be triggered so that say you wanted to listen to FLAC, it would make a .mpdignore file that say *.mp3 *.aac *.dsd etc. Then I think issuing an "mpc update" would make it take effect.

But again, this is only switching libraries, it's not organizing them.

That's the problem I'm facing - the folder structure cannot be recognized under the Album view.

It looks no difference in Runeaudio as the Album view and Network mounts's view have the same UI, but when using other MPD client such as the MPDroid on an android phone it will be very nice if multiple libraries or sets of album can be chosen.

Thanks, but I think it doesn't solve the problem as I'm looking for a function of browsing different set of album especially when using other MPD client which may have album view in cover art...
