What HDD Format to use with Rune and Pi 3

Postby kcgolfer » 02 Jun 2017, 22:05

I just started to build an NAS using Pi 3B and Rune. Have a 500GB HDD that will hold the music files. I'm a little confused as to the best format for the HD. FAT32 or exFAT. Can the Rune software read the exFAT or will I need to load a driver? Prefer to keep as simple as possible during the initial learning curve. Thanks in advance for input.

Depends on how you want to interact with the drive. If you plan on removing the drive and plugging to Windows or OSX, then FAT. If you plan on interacting through the Pi (over the network) then I would suggest using the native Linux file system. It's either ext2 or ext3, I can't remember which one it defaults, wanna say ext3.

Hello
Agree with westrock2000.
Prefer a native linux system for no interaction with Microsoft OS, i.e ext4
If you plan to use the drive in Microsoft OS, you can choose FAT32, exfat, ntfs.

My drive is an exfat system and works fine.
I think it works out-of-the-box, i don't remember if i installed some exfat-utils.
