Thats good news.

Thanks for reporting these points.

Hi Gearhead and janui. I'm thrilled to see you working on updating RuneAudio.

What is the current status of your project? Are you talking with the original RuneAudio devs about making this into a new official RuneAudio release? Is hondagx35 also working with you on 0.5 or is 0.4 work continuing on a separate path?

I ask since RuneAudio must be very confusing for newcomers with all these different versions around.

The official http://www.runeaudio.com/download/ still hosts the very old v0.3-beta downloads.

Then there was hondagx35's 0.4-beta releases runeaudio-0-4-beta-for-raspberry-pi2-3-t4434.html

And now your 0.5-beta release.

Plus rern's separate add-on menu
addons-menu-install-addons-the-easy-way-t5370.html

And various other tweaks spread throughout the forum.

I hope there will be a convergence from all this into a new official 0.5 release.

edit: If the original RuneAudio devs are reading this, could you also comment on the status of the whole project perhaps? You've previously stated that you're working in private on a big rewrite of RuneAudio, but it is by now unclear if that work is ongoing, temporarily stopped or permanently stopped.

RuneAudio was a promising peace of software back on 2014, but since then is going forward though personality & individual efforts.
Efforts that are not embraced neither rejected from the original team - at least in public - but thanks to them RuneAduio stays high competitive.
And that’s a Fact !

Thanks once again all of you guys (hondagx35,Gearhead, janui, rern, & all the rest including you as well @ waves) for make me (us) happy...

How can I fix the package manager to search on the right mirrors?

Yeah I still prefer the RuneAudio UI in comparison with the alternatives (Volumio, Moode, ...).

But a big worry is lack of security updates. The official downloads include by now very old Arch versions with known vulnerabilities in wifi and bluetooth, use outdated versions of SSL and so on. Yet there is no warning about that on the download pages or installation instructions. The first forum posts for later version (0.4 beta and 0.5 beta) do not say if they include those and other patches or instruct users on how to patch the system.

From a security POV there are only two acceptable paths forward IMHO: either
1 stick with releasing a whole custom OS image (Arch or some other distro) but then take on the responsibility to release timely updates that patch new vulnerabilities also in the bundled networking code that lies outside of RuneAudio itself. Or
2 switch to using a vanilla OS distribution (Raspbian?) and refactor RuneAudio to install as a package. Users would then install and update the OS including all the packages for networking, security and so on in the standard way. As soon as for example a wifi patch is released users can apply it without having to worry that it destroys their whole RuneAudio setup. They separately install and update RuneAudio through the package manager or through a UI button that performs a git pull in the background.

While approach 1 can seem easier for newcomers (just download this one image and write it to a SD card!) approach 2 seems over time much easier for users who don't want a device making their whole LAN vulnerable.

I don't know if there in 2018 is some under the hood reason that makes approach 2 impossible for these kinds of music boxes (custom changes to lower levels of the OS are necessary?). Would be interesting to hear more about that. But perhaps I should make a separate thread about that.

Just got one of the new Pi 3A+ , as I use batteries , I was interested to see the power draw in comparison to a zero . The 3/A+ is a smaller-footprint 3 without wired ethernet . It has a single full sized USB port and 512MB ram with dual band wifi and bluetooth . It will not boot when trying either version of 0.5b . Could this be caused by 512MB rather than the usual 1GB ram limitation of the 3 A+ ?

Same with me. Waited for 10 minutes. Rebooted and reflashed and tried again with same result. On a Pi 3b with Allo Boss 1.2.
Went through the thread very fast for a possible solution but may have missed if there is any solution documented.
Can anybody help with a solution?

You are approaching RuneAudio though a browser, aren't you?

Nah this is at fresh install of Runeaudio. I meant to say that I got stuck up in "starting..... Rune audio" screen during fresh install. And what you are saying as I understand is getting to RuneAudio UI through browser which will come after my first installation is successful.

I'm not sure I understand what you want to do exactly.
There is no need for any "installation"; you just write the image to an mSD, boot and approach RA through a browser.
Is even SSH not working?
