I have a Raspberry pi2 and hifiberry digi+ card but I'm unable to play high quality flac files. Some signal comes trough but it's clipping very badly. Could it be that my pi2 is just too slow for biggers files or is it because I have an external usb drive for my files?

I have the same problem, in my case the DAC in my receiver is unable to play the higher bitrate file. Check the spec of your DAC.

I have a 24bit/192k dsd capable dac and this setup has worked well when I had files on nas.
