Hi Frank,

as far as I can see /boot is identical, given the same kernel version

I don't think so. Where did you get the kernel version from?

Frank

/boot looks pretty similar to me after "pacman -Sy --force raspberrypi-firmware raspberrypi-bootloader linux-raspberrypi" on both versions (initially after uprading to a 4.9.x kernel and still now after the downgrade I mentioned in this post).

Hi Robert,

Your /boot and /root have to be from the same image.

Or in other words, the kernel has to be exactly the same.
Code: Select all
uname -a

Code: Select all
root@runeaudio(rw):~# uname  -a
Linux runeaudio 4.4.39-ARCH+ #5 SMP Sat Feb 11 15:43:36 CET 2017 armv7l GNU/Linux

This is because all the kernel modules belonging to this kernel are stored on the /root partition.
Code: Select all
root@runeaudio(rw):~# ls /usr/lib/modules
4.4.39-ARCH+  extramodules-4.4.39--raspberrypi
