RuneAudio 0.5-beta for most Raspberry Pi models

Postby janui » 15 Sep 2018, 11:14

Current build version: janui-20180903-11

Edit 15-07-2019: This release will not work on the new Raspberry Pi 3A+, Pi 4B or 5B models, but we are working on it.

As you may know, Gearhead and I have been working on updating the rune images. Basically, updating the packages on them as well as fixing bugs in the UI and also adding some functionality. We have created 2 images, for armv6 and v7, which are almost identical. The v6 image for the A/B1/Zero does not have a local browser as it is just too slow. Other than that, they work identically, the UI is the same for both images. We have been running these images for a couple of month now and have been putting them through some serious testing. Recently some other forum members have also contributed to testing and evaluation, many thanks to them for the time and effort. We think the images are now ready for a wider audience and wanted to get them out to you.

We feel that Rune has lagged behind other players a bit as there has not been an update to the B1 image since 2014 and Frank's B2 (v0.4b) image from 2017 was never placed on the download page as an 'official' version for others to find and enjoy. The Pi Zero makes a fine small player and has no current official image. The B3+ is also not supported directly by any of the available official images. These two new images will allow Rune to run on all available and previously available Raspberry Pi devices. We are currently running it on the Pi B+, Zero, Zero W, B2, B3 and a B3+ models. Both Gearhead and I are sold on Rune. We also think it is the best player out there. We have tried the others, did not like them for different reasons and came back to Rune. The UI is quicker and cleaner. It just makes a lot of sense which reflects back to the original group that put it together. We have added functionality but have tried to keep the UI fairly clean. Please let us know how we did.

The OS is running the most current packages (as of April 2018), specifically MPD, upmpdcli and other MPD support programs. All packages have been built for both architectures. We have added Bluetooth support for those devices with BT (only CLI at this time, but it seems to work). The Kernel is patched for 384k support as well as many of the DSD devices. Gearhead has tested 384k/24b support on PCM5122 as well as PCM5102 i2s cards. Another improvement is that we have changed from shairport to shairport-sync. Shairport-sync is fully integrated into the UI. It is much more robust than shairport and is in current development.

We are still making small improvements to the images. After setting up your installation you can use the git pull function in the /dev UI to upgrade to the latest version. For instructions see here: http://www.runeaudio.com/documentation/ ... rd-updates. The current build version is mentioned in the first line of this post. Your current version van be seen in the Debug UI, Build version: janui-20180903-x.

The UI changelog can be found in the repository which we have forked: https://github.com/gearhead/RuneUI/blob ... ngelog.txt

The OS changelog it here: https://github.com/gearhead/RuneOS/blob ... ngelog.txt

Have fun,

janui

Hi janui,

Rpi3b, RuneAudio 0.5-beta2.

Thank-you for releasing an update, But my fresh install is stuck on the "Starting rune audio" screen with a blinking cursor, and never gets past this.

Cannot collect debug info.

Hi,

You have to connect with a web browser and enable the local browser.

Hi Stéphane Acounis,

I Cannot connect with a web browser and enable the local browser, as it is stuck at boot up, I get a "Starting RuneAudio image" on my 7" screen, and it goes no further.

I can't even ssh into rune.

Can I enable the local browser in the config file?

Have you connected the player by ethernet ?
If you have a wifi dongle you can access it by its embedded AP (192.168.5.1 if I remember). The behaviour is the same as the 0.4 image.
