Raspberry Pi 2 with 802.11ac WIFI Dongle

Postby Tominthevan » 19 Jan 2017, 05:47

Has anyone succeeded in getting 5 GHz WIFI working with their Raspberry Pi rune setup?

I live in an extremely busy WIFI environment and can't get my regular Pi WIFI setup (802.11b/g/n) to work reliably. I have had to use an ethernet connection which works quite well. The 5 GHz band has very little use here, so I think it would work better for me and I'd prefer to use WIFI if I can get it working.

I bought a TP-Link 802.11ac WIFI dongle that uses the RTL8812au chipset. The build process I got from the Arch Linux website fails, probably because some required files are not included in the rune distribution. So, I'm looking to see of someone with more Linux experience than I have has found a way to get 5 GHz working with rune.

I had the same problem when I try to compile the drivers for Edimax AC600 dongle, that uses the same chipset (8812au).

Help would be really appreciated :)

I, too, tried and failed with this chipset.

In the end, I gave up and bought a couple of these, which are plug & play on my Pi2 & Pi3 running Rune, but not in Volumio:

@Yatsushiro - I see that the dongle you linked to works in both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Can you confirm that you have it working with runeOS at 5 GHz?

Also the Trendnet dongle I bought is a power hungry beast and (I've read) won't operate reliably when plugged directly into the Pi. Is your's operating OK in one of the Pi's USB slots?

Hi Tom

Yes, I can confirm that it works on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz (I have my home router set so that each band has a different SSID).

I use my adaptor plugged directly into my Pi USB ports. On my Pi3 it is powered via a 5v power supply through a Kali reclocker.

I can't recall the last time I had a WiFi problem...
