Had a nice evening with the unit humming along. Switched back to software control on the audio due to the variable loudness of different source material. I'll have to track down some HiRes files to compare to the 16/44.1 flacs I currently have.

Hi eea123,
Your HiFiBerry DAC supports hardware volume control. Using this is better than the software volume control. It will still lose a little quality (none at 100% volume), but very much less than the software control.

I understand and not to sound too lazy, but I would have to get up to adjust it. I did a whole house hardwired system, with standard rotary Niles Volume Controls (VCS) at most speaker locations. I haven't balanced each of the multichannel amp outputs, so the tablet quickly allows me to dial down the volume depending at which speaker set I'm listening from.
