Re: KALI reclocker and PIANO DAC giveaway

Hi Frank,

how to set the Piano DAC in "Dual-Mono" mode? (not 2.0, 2.1, 2.2)
seems not possible at all under RuneOS Beta 04.

Regards

my ALLO Piano 2.1 has arrived last week.

At the moment i'm about to integrate the controls in Rune.

So far all seems to work fine with my patched kernel.
Mode and crossover is available via alsamixer.

Hi,

try:

Code: Select all
amixer -c0 set 'Subwoofer mode' 'None'

and
Code: Select all
amixer -c0 set 'Dual Mode' 'Dual-Mono'

on console.

Hi Frank,

thank you - already tried but does not work ->

root@runeaudio(rw):~# amixer -c0 set 'Subwoofer mode' 'None'
amixer: Invalid command!
root@runeaudio(rw):~# amixer -c0 set 'Dual Mode' 'Dual-Mono'
amixer: Unable to find simple control 'Dual Mode',0

root@runeaudio(rw):~# amixer -c 0 sset "Dual Mode" "Dual-Mono"
amixer: Unable to find simple control 'Dual Mode',0

After researching, it seems that either RuneOS needs an more recent Linux kernel a/o the Piano DAC 2.1 an firmware update by ALLO (!?)

Here some outputs:

Hi Fidelity089,

If it is a later kernel you need to solve the problem, this image could help: runeaudio-0-3-beta-for-raspberry-pi-t502-520.html#p23625

It is based on the previous version to Franks latest 0.4, but it is upgraded to Linux 4.9.63.1. It's stable but does not contain the latest enhancements.

Janui,

thank you - with the upgraded kernel Dual Mode works - BUT - now I cannot activate I2S. :-(
It should show PianoDAC2.1 (I2S) - and not just PianoDacPlus (???) (see attachment)

I set the dtoverlay params as usual
Here my debug infos:

Hi Fidelity089,
Your settings look fine, you have selected the correct overlay driver for this DAC. This overlay is used for several DAC models, so it is possible that its description is misleading. But it looks like a newer version of the file: /srv/http/db/redis_acards_details is required. You should also temporarily set the 3.5mm jack output ON in the Settings UI. MPD will fail if there is no valid output device. When the I2S DAC is working you can switch this off again.
You can download my latest version of redis_acards_details here: http://www.mediafire.com/file/e112ybo5p ... ls.gz/file (SHA-256 of the .gz file is: D7906C8E414B59E5BAA5BCF0C37493909A5BFE95BBEDE1F616E358409ABA695D).
Download the file and check its SHA-256.
Unzip the file and copy it to: /srv/http/db
Then run the file with the commands (these commands also set the required file protection and ownership):
Code: Select all
chown -R http.http /srv/http/
find /srv/http/ -type f -exec chmod 644 {} \;
find /srv/http/ -type d -exec chmod 755 {} \;
chmod 777 /run
chmod 755 /srv/http/command/*
chmod 755 /srv/http/db/redis_datastore_setup
chmod 755 /srv/http/db/redis_acards_details
chown -R mpd.audio /var/lib/mpd
php -f /srv/http/db/redis_acards_details

Then reboot. The DAC should then appear in the MPD output selection screen.

Hi Janui,

thank you very much - all done as you suggested - and the Piano DAC 2.1 shows up as I2S device - but there´s no sound output at all
when not having activated the internal sound devices (HDMI & Jack)

If I activate them - sound output is ONLY on the left channel when Dual Mono mode is selected :-(

Had to change the MPD.conf device to hw: 1:0 due to the other cards..

I also tried this but without success...

sudo su
rm /var/lib/alsa/asound.state
CARD="$(cat /proc/asound/cards | grep "\[PianoDACPlus" | awk -F " " '{print $1}')"
alsactl init $CARD >/dev/null 2>&1
amixer -q -c $CARD set 'Dual Mode' 'Dual-Mono'
amixer -q -c $CARD set 'Digital' 100%
amixer -q -c $CARD set 'Subwoofer' 100%
alsactl store $CARD

here my debug file:
https://pastebin.com/39NZeE2U

Thank you for your effort and quick response - very much appreciated
regards

Hi Fidelity089,
Sorry, I can't help you much more, I don't have one of these DAC's to experiment with. Even so, just a few points...
Your debug looks fine.
Fidelity089 wrote:Had to change the MPD.conf device to hw: 1:0 due to the other cards..
This should not be needed, a reboot should set everything up correctly. If that is not happening, there is something significantly wrong.
If you have 3.5mm jack enabled, you could try switching ON each audio card in turn, finally selecting the Piano DAC. This sometimes clears problems.
In mpd.conf, the line 'format "176400:24:2"' should not be there, delete this line or use something like this: 'format "*:24:*"'. The 176400 will invoke SoXr to do resampling most of the time, this will reduce the sound quality. The 2 forces stereo output, this may conflict with your dual mono setting. The 24 is not normally a problem, but if you have music which is encoded @32bit it will reduce the quality, the DAC chip will process 16, 20, 24 and 32bit signals automatically without this setting. Personally, I don’t see any reason to include the format clause in the alsa output section.
And finally, a question, which outputs are us using when dual mono mode is selected? I suspect that you need to use red and red (or white and white).

Re: KALI reclocker and PIANO DAC giveaway

Postby sec.time » 29 Jun 2018, 04:05

Hi all,
I bought a Kali reclocker alone for the raspberry 3B with Rune audio 0.4-beta.
Could anyone help on how to change the setup in RuneAudio to enable Kali?
I like to connect I2S signal direct my ESS9038 Pro DAC but I already stuck at enable Kali.
I try all the I2S Kernel Modules setting in 0.4-beta RuneOS Kernel Settings page, none of them could get Kali to lock on any signal when playing songs.
One thing I notice is does not matter what DAC I choose in I2S Kernel Modules, the MPD AUDIO OUTPUT do not have any addition I2S DAC items show up.

Thanks

Hi sec.time,

all so called "slave DACs" should work with the KALI reclocker.

Slave means that the clock is generated by the source device (in this case, the RPi).

Many DACs are not only connected to I2S, but also need a I2C connection to work correctly.
If the DAC is not connected the kernel recognizes this and will not load the driver.

I would try the HiFiBerry DAC (without + and pro).
