Guide for using HDMI Display with RPI 3 B+

Postby DNB » 17 May 2017, 00:58

Good Morning,

I am building a audio player as a father/daughter project using a RPI 3 B+. We would eventually like to use the 7" touchscreen display, but for now we will be using a spare HDMI display I have.

I would like my daughter to be able to control the RPI 3 B+, running Rune Audio, using the display attached to the RPI, rather than using RuneUI on a separte device.

Is there a guide to how to do this?

I have read this trouble shooting guide http://www.runeaudio.com/documentation/ ... eshooting/

The only note I see is the line :"Rune UI can now be invoked in a browser", under "Normal Boot Sequence"

Is it a matter of simply having the display connected to the RPI, and the UI will be displayed?

Many thanks for any assistance.

Hi DNB,

father/daughter project sounds great.

Is it a matter of simply having the display connected to the RPI, and the UI will be displayed?

Yes, but
- RuneAudio is optimized for 7" displays, so you have to tweak zoom level
Check the file /home/root/.config/midori/config and change zoom-level.

- The local browser (display) is optimized for a 7" touch display, so the cursor is disabled by default.
The cursor can be enabled in /root/.xinitrc
use_cursor no > -use_cursor yes
See here

Hi,

Downloaded 0.4, as suggested, and it works!

Many thanks Frank!

Used putty to connect via ssh to the RPI, to edit .xinitrc to activate the mouse pointer. Succesfully connected to root using the usernam and password in docs.

Unfortunately I have no idea how to edit .xinitrc :)

Could someone tell me the commands to edit the file? First time putty/ssh user!

Thanks again!

Hi,

to edit .xinitrc via ssh use:
Code: Select all
nano /root/.xinitrc

or use WinSCP with notepad++.

Frank

- Get access to the console:
Use SSH from your PC
If you are not familiar with SSH read this for Windows or this for Linux/MacOS
The default login for RuneAudio is "root" with the password "rune" (without quotes).

- Use sftp to access files on Rune Audio:
Get WinSCP from here and install it.
When it opens setup the following:
- Session
File Protocol: SCP
Host name: The IP address of you Raspberry Pi
User name: root
Password: rune

That's it, connect and you can transfer files just by dragging and dropping.

Hi,

Many thanks for your assistance.

I used the nano command to edit the .xinitrc file.

When I rebooted the RPI i had zero output from the HDMI (blank screen).

The RPI still booted. I checked the .xinitrc file and the mouse pointer was on, but no output.

Connected via the RuneUI. Could modify settings etc.

Entered wifi details and Spotify premium account details while still connected via ethernet.

Checked Spotify functionality while still connected via ethernet. Spotify would play, but volume was very low and volume control was disabled.

Disconnected RPI, removed ethernet cable, and rebooted.

Connected to my HiFi Amp via 3.5mm jack. Spotify would play, no volume control via RuneUI but can control volume with amp (of course!)

So, we are nearly there! I just need to get the display working! Any ideas?

Many Thanks

OK, I have confirmed: Changing the .xinitrc file to read "use_cursor yes" from "use_cursor no" kills my HDMI output completely.

When i change the .xinitrc file back to "use_cursor no", I get HDMI output again.

Can anyone help with this?

Many thanks!
