[SOLVED] ethernet connection not working - no device found

Postby ABBDVD » 27 Dec 2014, 16:26

Hi

I just stumbled over runeaudio yesterday when looking for an easy solution to stream music from my Synology NAS in my bedroom. Anyway, I borrowed a Raspberry Pi B from my cousin for trying it out, flashed the SD card and hooked it all up, but I'm struggling to get the ethernet connection working. My router doesn't display the device as being in the network (not without an IP address listed either). I got the MAC address from ifconfig in the runeaudio console and added a reserved address assignment on the router but no dice.

The ethernet cable worked with my laptop before connected to the same spot on the switch. The switch has also the computer I'm currently working on hooked up, so I know the switch currently has a network connection. The LED lights seem to be ok everywhere as well. The switch displays 100Mbps connected, the RPi has FDX green, Link sometimes blinking (but generally green) and 100 is yellow.

ifconfig displays:
eth0 flags:4163 <UP, BROADCAST, RUNNING, MULTICAST> mtu:1500
ether b8:27:eb:7c:49:70 txqueuelen 1000 (Ethernet)
RX packets:633 bytes 58030 (56.6 KiB)
RX errors:0 dropped:1 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:3 bytes 1167 (1.1 KiB)
TX errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000

lo: flags=73<UP, LOOPBACK, RUNNING> mtu 65536
inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 255.0.0.0
loop txqueuelen 0 (Local Loopback)
RX packets:4572 bytes 216046 (210.9 KiB)
RX errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:4572 bytes 216046 (210.9 KiB)
TX errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0

The router is a Netgear WNR2000v2 (elderly wlan router) and the switch is a 'normal' Netgear ProSafe GS108GE.
Could someone give me advice or a link to a troubleshooting guide? I haven't had such a problem before and don't really know what to do.

Thanks

Regards

Not alot to go by but seems like you arent getting a dhcp address assigned to the Pi....

Obviously you can try different ports or cables but from the description it seems thats ok. You can try with a static address as a test. You can hook up a monitor to the Pi during boot to get more info.

You can look at this post: http://www.cameroncooke.com/2010/01/13/ ... -it-works/

First of thank you for your reply.

The linked post refers to DHCP not being switched on in the router settings, which is definitely not the case here. I don't have static IP addresses setup on any of the other devices hooked up to the network.

I already have a monitor (or rather projector as that's the only unoccupied 'screen' with HDMI in the house) connected to the RPi. What information should/can I provide? I didn't see anything special when booting besides two failing messages (about journey socket or so?) which were mentioned somewhere to be perfectly normal on runeaudio.

I'll try setting up a static address on the RPi. Can I just refer to this general guide for linux: http://www.wikihow.com/Assign-an-IP-Add ... x-Computer

I read that the runeaudio configuration shouldn't be changed except by advanced users which I'm obviously not, so I would rather ask once too much what I can/should do. At least there's nothing I can break really.

Thanks!

yeah looking at the link again, it seems thats for the WAN side and your problem is the LAN side.

archlinux doesnt use the interfaces file like ubuntu so take a look here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be ... connection

basically you need to tweak the /etc/netctl/eth0 file

as for messing with Rune, as you said, you cant break anything you just start again :)

Had a look at this post: http://www.element14.com/community/thre ... 0&tstart=0
So apparently a cable can be faulty despite working with another device. So I tested another cable (cat 5 instead of cat 6 this time) and it worked... -.-*

PS: thanks anyway cmh714
